Russian Hackers Attack The Pentagon With Advanced Malware

A group of Russian hackers have been progressively attacking the U.S. They previously targeted the white House and State Department and have now launched a hacking campaign against the Pentagon.

The hackers are using extremely advanced hacking technology that make them incredibly difficult for even the U.S government to  detect.

Emails have been sent to numerous online publications from the Defense Department stating that “at least five” DOD computer users have been targeted. The notification states that these attacks are connected to attacks on the State Department and the White House. Whether or not the hacks led to the theft of any data or documentation has yet to be revealed.

Technical specifications detailed in the notification suggest that the Russian hackers have significantly increased their efforts and are using some of the world’s most advanced hacking technology in order to trick users to download viruses onto their systems. The viruses then allow the hackers to siphon files and messages, including extremely sensitive information.

Michael Adams, a computer security expert, states, “The sophistication of this attack far surpasses anything we have seen to date from any state actors.” Adams has spent more than twenty years operating within the U.S Special Operations Command.  “The level of sophistication of this attack is like comparing a World War I propeller-driven fighter plane to a stealth bomber coming in under the radar, completely destroying its target, and leaving before the enemy even realizes they have been attacked,” Adams said.

It was on the 8th of July that U.S. security first detected the hacks. At that time victims were receiving emails from the National Endowment for Democracy, a Washington based non profit organisation which supports pro-democracy efforts around the world, including in Russia, where the hacks originate from.

The emails that the victims received advised them to click on a link, which led to an infected server from where their systems downloaded the dangerous malware software.  That malware is similar to the malware that was used in attacks against the U.S. in April of this year.

“The malware was discovered on some systems, but it’s a virtual certainty that there are more instances of this malware inside the DOD and whatever other parts of our infrastructure this enemy has targeted,” Adams said.
